The Illusion Of Identity

The Illusion Of Identity

So many of us search for some sort of identity. One thing that religion often gives us is the illusion of purpose. Everyone wants to believe that they have some sort of purpose in this world. Guess what? If you sit around and waste your years then you won't have a purpose in this life. Don't wait for your ship to come in. Make your ship come in. We all want to have an identity in this life, but maybe our struggle to find it is where we make our first mistake.

The illusion of identity is that we must have one. What is my identity? I've never associated myself with one thing. Whether I say I'm a witch, an alchemist, a writer, or a blogger, there is still one thing that I'm not picking up on. I don't need an identity in the first place. So who am I really? I'm someone who has been put on this earth for only one thing: to love. If I fail to love then I have failed to do the only thing that is really worth pursuing in life. There is an illusion that is attached to finding an identity and that is that an identity carries weight, and more importantly, an ego.

We've talked about Carl Jung's work before in experimental psychology. His belief was that we have two major halves known as a persona and a shadow. The persona is what someone uses to establish social links in this life. The persona is, quite simply, your other self that guides you through the maze that is life. Our shadow, on the other hand, is where we cast all of our bad qualities, most often the ones we don't want to accept. In conclusion, Jung believed that identity was split into two contrasting halves. His theory is stalwart and worth exploring. The internet is always a place where we can find valuable information on a wide range of topics.

The search for an identity is something that should not be taken. If you are to seek some sort of mask for you to wear in society then it should be one that comes from the heart. Don't try to fit into a group or become someone you're not. Shed your skin and embrace a shapeless form. You will find a place in life, whether it's one you want or not. Identity is something that I myself have truly never found, be it by my intention or not. I always like the shapeshifters in mythology. They are always the ones who can adapt and blend into any setting. It's admirable, even. Why be one form or identity when you can be any? We've all wanted to change the image in the mirror before. We don't need a special purpose. What we need is some sort of way to deal with life's pressure. I'm sure you won't find that type of way in some sort of religious manual, but maybe perhaps somewhere deep inside of you. That strength inside of you is something that you absolutely need. An identity won't keep you strong enough to survive life's trials. A persona, or maybe a few new “forms” will, though. If you can embrace what makes you truly special, then you have it made. Ciao!
