Teenage Depression

Teenage Depression

Teenage Depression has been diagnosed at record highs in the past few years. Many reasons revolve around schooling and the modernization of society. Bullying also plays a significant factor in the onset of teenage depression. Additionally, social media and the pressures created from it add a new layer to the already complex problem that teenage depression presents. Changes to the physical body also play a factor in teenage depression. Parents need to be vigilant and approach everything a teenager goes through carefully and, above all else, with empathy.

Symptoms are varied and range from irritability and loss in interest of desired activities to conflict with friends and family. Normal symptoms such as loss of sleep or oversleeping are common. Feelings of hopelessness and loss of appetite are key signs that your child may have depression. Other signs to look out for are low self-esteem and trouble concentrating. Anger over trivial matters and thoughts of suicide and death are obvious signs. Self-blame and extreme sensitivity to rejection are yet even more symptoms.

There is two forms of proven effective treatment, one being more heavy-handed than the other. Psychological counseling and medication are used in most cases of treatment of teenage depression. Usually, the introduction of either treatment may be rejected by teens. I recomend open discussion with your teenage child before beginning either treatment. Sometimes, treatment can be done on a parent-child level, but most often, in serious cases professional treatment will prove more effective.

Teenage Depression is caused by certain factors such as hormones, learned negative behavior, and childhood trauma. Inherited traits and biological factors round up the most common causes of teenage depression. Teenage Depression is a serious thing and it needs to be treated if your child has it, as treatment may literally be what prevents your child from dying. Teen suicide has been on the rise for years on end and it has risen by our own ignorance as parents. We need to stop saying it is just a phase our children are going through. My friends, Jen and Josalyn are dead because of this epidemic that is depression. We can't continue to sit here and not act. You can find millions of pages on Google about Teenage Depression but I took it upon myself to write about this glaring problem because I have the ability to make people care. I was put on this world to make a difference. No church is going to understand what your child is going through, but I do. Stop acting as if Teenage Depression is something that can be swept under a rug.

We love our children, there is no denying that, but the problems that teenagers face today are different than what we grew up with. We didn't have things like smartphones and Facebook growing up, and these are just a few of the things that can present difficulties for our children. Be active and involved with your child's life, and if they need help, then get them help. It may just save your child's life.

In memory of my friends Jen and Josalyn, RIP I wasn't strong enough to save you, but I'll make up for it, I swear.
