The Human Mind: A Blank Slate
The mind we have been given is a wonderful tool, useful for living and loving, emotion and calculation. It is the strongest of all the body parts, be it on us or any animal. Our intelligence is unrivaled in the animal kingdom: it is a slate or canvas to be drawn or painted upon. The mental images we form in our mind are ones that are both self-defined and co-dependant defined. When it comes down to it all, we are alone in this life, until we sculpt our mind, and thus our life.
I understand the intricacies of the human mind well, an I know fully that suffering is all in the mind and exists first most there. We understand enlightenment is the key to alleviating suffering (eliminating it.) Our mind is one of both emotion and thought, in fact, emotion and thought are directly connected. Before an emotion can be formed it first must be a thought. That thought can become too great for ourselves to contain, and manifest as an emotion, be it inside or out. We often hear the phrase "He/she wears their heart on their sleeve." This isn't true about just the aforementioned person, but also anyone. We all have our emotions showing everywhere we go. The only thing we can do is select which emotions we carry with us and how we show them, ourselves taking into consideration that we are conscious of our own emotions.
That blank slate, the human mind, we record our thoughts and emotions must be controlled. Sound easy? It's not. In fact, controlling our own mind is very hard to do. We can try various techniques to control our emotions and thus mind, but it is a persistent behavior. These tricks we use to keep our mind stable must be practiced all the time, as we are constantly living, feeling, thinking, and ultimately changing. That's right: our mind is changing rapidly. Our mind age, changes, and takes in different beliefs and values. These change the picture we have stored in our mind, as if it is a type of mental "channel." That mental channel of ours dictates what we see, feel, hear, taste, and smell. Our physical senses change based on our perceptions. What we sense is controlled by what we think of this world and this life. Do not fall prey to your surroundings, as all we see is a self-created illusion. What the world really is like is solely in the mind.
How Can We Control Our Mental Image?
We must take liberties to control what is shaped in the mind for mental image. We should keep morality and logic close, and be realistic in thought. Meditate and exercise daily if possible, and be sure to monitor your stress level. Our stress levels effect how we react to stimuli. Our self-control is needed to keep good, positive things in our mind. What we keep inside of our mind and thus heart will shape our karmic actions. Good karma is reliant on our actions, and our actions our reliant on our thoughts, and what is in the mind. Never believe that any thought is worthless, and always try to succeed in both the mind and the heart, understanding thoughts, if not controlled, will always become some sort of manifested karma. Control your mind, control your heart, control your thoughts, and be wary of what is on your mental channel. Guard all against bad karma, and seek enlightenment, as it is the only true way of clearing away your mind's suffering.
