Dream practice and analyzation has been around since ancient times. Likewise, it is also followed in Tibet. When Buddhist arrived alongside medical advancement in Tibet during the seventh century. Dream interpretation also became a big deal, and is heavily influenced by the Buddhist school of thought.
There is a concept known as bardo, which is a state that is a sort of transitionary state experienced by the mind after death. It lasts a maximum of 49 days. In it we see a world of full of danger and allure, much like a dream state. We see things experienced in our life without the ability to interact with our surroundings. This makes it extremely hard for us to identify the state of our consciousness and the fact that we are dead. Because of that very similarity between dreams and bardo, such a thing called dream yoga exists. Dream yoga functions to recognize and understand this very state, bardo.
Dream interpretation is still a major part of Tibetan medicine. Tibetan school thought separates dreams into a number of archetypes: ones structured by culture and belief systems, ones that are visions and revelations experienced by a yogic spiritualist, ones produced from environment and spirits, ones made by diseases and omens, and finally premonitions.
Dream analyzation plays a major role in diagnosis, especially of diseases. Tibetan healers with a background in dream interpretation can often determine aspects of a diseases by listening to a patient's dreams, even pinpointing the organ(s) affected.
Dream meanings
The language of the mind as it's known, can not give an exact interpretation of a dream. The dream world is symbolic, as it represents many things occurring in the dreamer's mind/world. It is surreal, by far. I do not believe anyone man can accurately diagnose many dreams successfully. Even still, the best way to learn is practice on your own dreams. Keep a dream journal, and record those dreams before you forget them. We live in a twisted, broken world. We can learn much from dreams and ultimately the mysteries of life.
I will share a very personal part of me. I dream self only, or at least to the point where I can't remember most of them. When I do, it is filled with mostly aliens and zombies. I never see a person, and if there is a person, we are in a quaking world of fear full of nightmares and the undead and more. I do not understand any of this. These dreams have occurred for years. There may be an underlying tone of fear throughout them. All I know is that when the dreams occur, I never can determine if it is a dream or real. And I have a point. Dreams are a form of reality. Altered reality, but still very real. I'll leave this story of my own journey completely up to your own insight and interpretation.
Concluding today's discussion, if you will, dreams are like messages. They are messages only ourselves can truly understand. Dreams are intense, hallucinogenic, and an enigma. If one can solve the mystery that is a dream, they are surreal, and are on the right path. We are all on this journey together, and I hope you will be there to serve your fellow man and woman.
