Why We Fail To Understand The Homeless

Why We Fail To Understand The Homeless

I've studied this for a long time. I knew someone once was homeless. After "Rocket," a half-native, half-white man, received a home, he chose to be homeless again. He wasn't evicted. He just couldn't get used to not be homeless. This is just one of the several cases of people who guarantee a lifelong battle with homelessness for themselves. Don't hate them, but don't feel sorry for them. They, like most people in life, chose their own fate.

Homelessness is almost always coupled with crime and drug abuse. A felony conviction as an adult will guarantee difficulties renting and finding a job to pay for your rent. Many people who become criminals apply for SSI and state aid simply because they can't get a job. Many criminals start to sell drugs and steal to provide for their needs and families simply because they are not afforded any other option. This often leads to apartment evictions, drug abuse, and trips back to jail and prison. They start to boomerang between lockup and the streets. The drugs they use and lifestyles they live lead to mental issues. Then, being on the streets doesn't matter to them anymore. It has became sort of their temporary home, as sleeping in alleys, staying in shelters, hotel stays, and couch surfing becomes their means to escape the streets when they need. If they need extra cash? Sell something, spot some nice looking fellow to ask for some bucks. Ask enough people and you're sure to get some cash, especially if the people you ask look religious. They often are dumb enough to give their last dime. Now, the homeless can buy cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, or whatever they may want at the moment. They seem to always want just that, especially booze. It helps with their depression, they believe. Actually, it just makes it worse. The concept of codependency is constant in a life full of addiction, including to the bottle.

The homeless lifestyle is the harshest of all, including so many factors that eat away at the human body, heart, mind, and soul. it's like becoming hollow and never becoming whole. Without support from solid friends and family, you'll never recover. Missions and shelters cannot provide the support and love that each of these individuals require. This doesn't mean a free place to stay, meals to eat, or a few bucks to buy them what they want. That only enables them to do worse. Money only makes them worse. The homeless are not known for their money management skills. Why would they be? Their lack of fiscal knowledge is just one of the many reasons why they are homeless. They'll probably just stay homeless forever. Stop crying for them. If you want to help them get clean and sober, offering them stability along the way, then do it. Otherwise, please, shut up, because you're not helping anyone.

Like all problems in life, you have to ask yourself: are you part of the solution, or part of the problem? Always, the ignorant who fail to grasp the truth and come to a conclusion are just mad, who cannot see the truth about homelessness, either. It's a complicated problem that requires time and resources for that requires too much for most of us to deal with. It's okay, though. Being ignorant and lacking all compassion is truly the American way. Why would we ever want to help someone who isn't ourselves? That seems to be the standard for a nation that lacks God because they no longer have faith in Him. Things will get better, right? No, not without Him. Even the homeless know that, right?
