Teen Depression: The Challenge It Creates
Teen depression is one of the most challenging things that anyone could ever face and it is much more complex than its adult counterpart. Teen depression has two harsh conditions that makes it difficult to live with, one, being the intense and constantly changing world that a teen lives in. The second condition that makes teen depression difficult to contend with is the fact that teens have a limited amount of resources to work with.
Teens don't work the same way an adult does. Their bodies and minds feel now and think about it later. It is a completely normal and appropriate response as teens are very open to external stimuli. The major drawback is that when the stimuli, or ("experiences,") become negative, then teens tend to get upset. If they become too upset they may suffer from bad thoughts which destroys their self image and may make them want to hurt themselves. If you're a teen reading this, the best possible thing you can do in this situation is tell someone you trust about your feelings. It may save your life.
The other factor that makes teen depression tricky is the lack of resources available to depressed teens. Often, as parents, we believe things like this is a phase. That is ignorance on our parts. Depression is something that won't go away. It is painful and a nightmare to live through. If teens had open treatment and support for their depression then things would go better for them. The only thing that blocks teens from receiving treatment is, you guessed it, parents. Without the proper acknowledgement, teens won't be able to receive treatment and care for obvious reasons. Teen don't often work jobs, have money, insurance, and transportation. Parents, I'm begging you, open your eyes. Help your teen before it is too late.
Teen depression is confusing for all of our children. Acting out and seeking attention are not games our kids play but instead a way for teens to feel better. When we are upset we just want someone to make us feel better. Unfortunately, this is only a temporary solution. Depression will often return to the victim as there isn't much that teens can do to wash away all those of bad thoughts without the proper care. Not all treatments work the same for different depressed teens. Parents of depressed teens should see a professional to discuss treatment plans for their child. It's never too late for your teen to get back control of their life and manage their symptoms.
Teen depression is very challenging, but, with a little help from the parents and a trained professional, teens can beat depression. Don't believe you can do this on your own. Stop pretending teen depression will go away. Seek help now, because you are beautiful and deserve a happy life.
