Let's Talk: Teenage Depression

Teenage Depression Awareness

As I sat down to write today's blog post, I thought of what really matters, and that is our children. They face a hostile environment we call this world. Our schools are not monitored well enough to ensure our children's mental and physical needs. Teens suffer from all sorts of problems, including peer pressure and the struggle for their own identity. To top it all off, many teens are being diagnosed with depression. For many students, this is the door that opens to even more issues, including drug abuse and thoughts of suicide. Right now, it's never been worse to be a teen. The problems they face are much greater than what we went through at their age.

Bullying, as always, is a constant issue for students, including the strain we know as cyber bullying. You might think this is no big deal, but, guess what, it is. Many teens have committed suicide as a result of cyber bullying. It makes my heart sink and I just want a moment of silence right now for those children we've lost because of bullying. I don't know why we aren't more active in our children's lives, but their first line of defense against the problems they face is us. We must continue to remain active in our children's lives and give them what they greatly need: love and encouragement.

Teenage depression is something that doesn't go away. When our children have bad thoughts, they may reach out to us for help. It's important to recognize the signs of teenage depression, including self-harm and loss of interest in activities. They may stop eating, start avoiding their friends and maybe even you. Greater signs exist, including isolation and frequent crying. Your child may even try to kill themselves. There is many signs of teen depression that we must search for each and every day. If your child stops talking to you or starts to fail in school you can safely say that depression makes for part of the equation.

In my new series, depression and other issues that teens suffer from are part of the background of this newly reignited fantasy romance. Mindi is introduced as a new character who lives in a broken home and trusts no one, save for her best friend, Karla, who is in the closet. Together they meet Blake, a teen with a very dark past. The story blends elements from many desirable young adult and fantasy stories to make for an all-new exciting story. Outside of their challenging teenage lives, they must walk the thin line between the city's underworld and their own sanity. The underworld that Blake is a part of is not for the typical teen. Good thing Mindi and Karla are far from ordinary!

Teenage depression is very real and we need to be aware of it. Our children deserve our love and compassion. If your teen is depressed, act before it's too late. Get them the treatment and support they need. Don't wait. Your teen can get better. Don't believe that it's just a phase for them. Depression is heck. They won't be okay if you sit around and don't act. Tomorrow it could be them hurting themselves, and later on it could be their own death through means of suicide. I know you love your children. Please, research more online if you want to find out more. Just search “Teenage Depression.”
