Believe it or not, (and I do mean that quite literally,) hauntings usually occur because of a number of preset factors. Ghosts don't haunt an area by choice, but because of some sort of unfinished business or something they could not complete in life. The creatures that can be classified as poltergeist aren't exactly your friendly ghosts. They are spirits of malevolence that ravage their former dwellings and often are unrelated to the family currently living in their once humble abode. Think of ghosts as creatures, for better or worse, that can't let go.
Hauntings often occur based off a few major key factors, and many minor ones. Usually a ghost stays in an area if that was there former home, that it was where they were murdered or committed suicide at, or they are attempting to be with one they love even after death. None of these hauntings can be cleared easily, especially for one who is not gifted in paranormal investigations. Several minor factors occur within the major factors listed above, but most of them are tied into ghosts who are conscious of their death and are merely finishing unfinished business. They cannot go on to the next life until their business is settled. Ghosts also have the potential to haunt an area simply because it is a hotbed for supernatural activity, or somewhere where many people died, like a battlefield. These factors are usually less problematic because of the isolated places these ghosts exist in. Out of all reported cases when it comes to verified hauntings, few, if any, deaths are reported. Ghosts are not creatures of actual destructive nature because of their noncoporeal state, but it is to note that they can be quite hostile if there is a failure to communicate with them and lay them to rest. Where do ghosts go after they are appeased? No one knows, no matter how many religious sects attempt to explain them away. As for my thoughts, yes, I believe they are creatures who have not been successfully led to the underworld. This is a place of both non-religious and religious magnitude, and it is up to me to believe that ghosts may never fully fade away and they are the true persona of the afterlife.
Hauntings can scare little children and adults alike but I fully advise that should you ever be in such a situation that you calmly contact a psychic or a medium to attempt to appease the spirits.
