Excesses

Excess can be anything and everything.  Common examples of things that people may have  excess in are food, material possessions (whatever they may be),  an excessive habit to money, whether it be spending too much or saving too much. Having excess can become an obsession quite easily for a person. Anyone and everyone is not immune to worldly desires. Without a strong support system and conviction, a person can fall into excess.

Excess acts against your own personal enlightenment. Enlightenment is never fully achieved and any excess takes away from inner contentment. I'm not telling you to not to save money and not to engage into habits and hobbies you enjoy. By all means, live your life to the fullest. Just remember, everything in moderation. Self discipline is a great thing and when we limit ourselves from what this world has to offer, we benefit greatly.

Some things that are bad in excess are drugs, sex, money, material possessions, socialization, eating, sleeping, emotional outbursts and anything else that eats away at our time. None of these excesses listed should surprise you. To stop such habits would take self realization or an intervention, or perhaps both. As human beings we are a spiritual being inside. An incredible fleshly vehicle on the outside. Why would we want to degrade what keeps us bound to this world? Our mind and soul are two halves that should be constantly working together to form harmony. Inner peace lies within ourselves, for your inner reflection is often the harshest. Excess poisons us, and we must rid it much like a poison that has been introduced into our body. People going to a sauna to sweat out the body's toxins is a good analogy of how we must rid ourselves of excesses.

When you wake up in the morning, you have all day to work or play. How we decide to spend that time is often controlled by our inner desires. If we live for gratification alone, we will never grasp enlightenment. If we work all day, we'll be unhappy, a cruel fate indeed. It's just best to find somewhat of a happy medium. To rid yourselves of excesses is something that requires a lot of time to mediate upon. If you can feel at peace with yourself, then nothing can keep you off the pathway to enlightenment. Enlightenment lies in the heart and if we can give away our bodily desires our heart's desires will take over. Be true to yourself and examine your life. Is being wrapped up in one or more excesses really worth your time, energy, and soul?
